In the Joint Communiqué, both countries expressed their desire to further strengthen bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs of each other, as well as developing cooperation in various areas. Speaking upon the signing, Ambassador Hackett said that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries represented “an opportunity for fostering greater interaction between our two peoples and cultures by promoting trade in goods and services as well as investment.”
Referring to the current global financial crisis and the importance of
international and regional cooperation in responding to the challenges it posed, Dr. Hackett stated that Barbados looked forward to working with Lithuania, both bilaterally as well as at the regional and international levels, to promote greater understanding and to eliminate the factors that threaten development and progress.
In response, the Permanent Representative of Lithuania stated that
Lithuania was expanding its focus of interest and was looking forward to the development of an active and substantial relationship with Barbados, both bilaterally and within the United Nations. The signing ceremony was held at the Permanent Mission of Lithuanian in New York and was witnessed by the diplomatic staff attached to both Missions.
